Unbelievable Turnaround: Bangor Girls’ Epic Victory Ends Losing Streak!

The Bangor High School girls’ basketball team wanted to end its three-game losing streak against Hampden Academy on Monday. They succeeded. Bangor, in Class AA, had Mimi Quinn, a senior forward, leading the way with 23 points and 16 rebounds, the highest in the game. They defeated the tough Class A Broncos with a score of 47-34.

Now, Bangor has an 8-3 record, while Hampden Academy falls to 5-4. Mimi Quinn, standing at 6 feet tall, expressed their determination, saying, “We were tired of losing.” The Rams had experienced two buzzer-beater losses against Brewer and Lewiston in their previous games. However, in this game, they stepped up mentally and followed through with a strong performance.

Hampden Academy faced challenges as they were missing two starters: senior forward Lauren Voteur (concussion) and freshman guard-forward Aubrey Shaw (illness). Voteur, known for guarding Quinn, was absent, opening up opportunities under the basket for Bangor. Quinn, besides her scoring, also contributed with two assists and two blocked shots.

Avery Clark, a sophomore forward, had 12 points, five rebounds, three steals, and two assists. Meanwhile, sophomore guard Dalaney Horr added six points, nine rebounds, and two steals to the scoreboard. Junior guard Emily Adams chipped in with four points, seven rebounds, and two assists.

Hampden Academy’s standout senior guard, Lucy Wiles, led her team with 15 points, seven rebounds, and two steals. Freshman guard Katelyn Adams contributed nine points with three 3-pointers. Lucy’s sister, freshman guard Eve Wiles, added six points, and junior forward Caitlyn Murphy contributed five points and 10 rebounds.

Mimi Quinn’s outstanding performance in the first half with 15 points and 10 rebounds helped Bangor secure a 28-13 lead at halftime. She continued to excel with six more points in the third period, extending their lead to 36-20.

In the fourth quarter, the Broncos mounted a comeback, closing the gap to nine points with a 9-2 run. However, Bangor coach Jay Kemble called a timeout and implemented a deliberate spread offense. The Rams managed to score seven consecutive points, securing their victory.

Bangor dominated the first quarter, outscoring the Broncos 15-3, establishing a lead they never surrendered. They closed the first quarter with an 11-point run.

Despite a strong effort in the second half, Hampden Academy couldn’t overcome Bangor’s lead. Coach Nick Winchester acknowledged the improved performance in the second half but pointed out the challenge of facing Bangor with a short-handed team.

Hampden Academy will play against Nokomis in Newport on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m., while Bangor’s next game is against Hampden Academy on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
