Senator Angus King from Maine has put forward a new law to make the country safer and protect the Second Amendment, which is the right to bear arms. This comes after some tragic shootings, with one happening in Maine.
Senator King wants to make it clear that his law won’t take away people’s rights to have guns. He, along with Senator Martin Heinrich, introduced the Gas-Operated Semi-Automatic Firearms Exclusion (GOSAFE) Act. The goal is to prevent mass shootings while still allowing Americans to have guns for self-defense, hunting, or sports shooting.
Senator King explained that instead of focusing on how guns look, we should understand how they work and what makes them dangerous. The GOSAFE Act is designed to address weapons with high lethality, like the one used in the tragic shooting in Lewiston, Maine, where 18 people lost their lives.
After that terrible event, Maine started using a law called the “yellow flag” law more often. This law restricts access to guns during mental health crises. Since the shooting, it has been used 36 times, making up 30% of all gun restrictions since it started in 2020.
Senator King wrote an article for the Portland Press Herald, saying his main goal is to save lives. The new law, supported by Senators Mark Kelly and Michael Bennet, wants to limit the number of bullets a gun can hold and make gun magazines permanent, so shooters can’t reload quickly.
It also aims to stop the sale of certain types of guns and make devices like bump stocks and Glock switches illegal. Senator King assures that this law won’t affect responsible gun owners in Maine, allowing exceptions for traditional hunting and self-defense guns.
Senator King mentioned that even former President Donald Trump banned “bump stocks” in 2019, and most people support background checks and “red flag” laws. He believes saving lives shouldn’t be a political issue.
Senator King acknowledges that nothing can bring back the lives lost in Lewiston, but he believes responsible actions can prevent such nightmares in the future. The victims of the mass shooting in Lewiston are remembered, and Senator King wants to honor them by working towards a safer future.
