National health care company proposes $61M rehab hospital in Bangor

The biggest rehab hospital company wants to open a 50-bed hospital in Bangor, Maine. They want to help because the main hospital in Bangor stopped offering these services last year.

The company, Encompass Health Corp., already works in Maine but wants its first hospital in Bangor. They plan to build it on Union St.

The hospital will give 24-hour care to people recovering from serious illnesses and injuries like amputations, brain injuries, and strokes. It will cost about $61.4 million.

Encompass needs state approval to go ahead. They have to show there’s a real need for this kind of hospital.

The big hospital in the area, Eastern Maine Medical Center, had to stop these services last year because they didn’t have enough staff.

Encompass wants to provide physical, occupational, and speech therapies to help people get better. If it happens, this hospital will work with other local hospitals.

Encompass has hospitals in many states and wants to expand. They just opened hospitals in Wisconsin and Texas, and more are planned in Rhode Island and Connecticut.

The local hospital system, Northern Light Health, thinks it’s a good idea. They say there’s a need for these services, and they already work well with Encompass in Portland.

This new hospital could be a good addition for people in Bangor who need these kinds of services.
