On Sunday night, a man lost his life after a short exchange of gunfire with Portland police near Interstate 295.
It all began when the police got a report of an aggravated assault involving a man named Kyle Desmarais, who was said to have brandished a handgun. Acting Police Chief Robert Martin shared this information.
Later that night, Officers Jacob Webster and Jordin Jackson spotted Desmarais driving south on I-295. They decided to stop him at exit 2.
As the officers tried to talk to Desmarais on the off-ramp, he reportedly stepped out of his vehicle and aimed a gun at Webster and Jackson.
This led to an exchange of gunfire between Desmarais and the two officers. Desmarais’ shots hit the officers’ cars, but the officers’ return fire incapacitated him, according to Martin.
Fortunately, neither Webster nor Jackson sustained any injuries. They provided immediate assistance to Desmarais, but sadly, he did not survive, passing away at the scene.
Following the standard procedure for any use of deadly force by law enforcement officers in the state, the Maine attorney general’s office is conducting an investigation into the incident. Both officers have been put on administrative leave, following the Portland Police Department’s protocol.
