Maine Gives Free College Tuition to Lewiston Shooting Heroes and Families

Free University Tuition for Lewiston Shooting Victims’ Families

In Portland, Maine, there’s some good news for the families affected by the recent mass shooting. The state’s public university system is offering free tuition to the families of those who lost their lives and to those who were injured in the tragic incident. This is the deadliest mass shooting in Maine’s history, where 18 people lost their lives on October 25 when a gunman attacked a bowling alley and a restaurant.

The program, known as the Lewiston Strong Tuition Waiver, is a thoughtful initiative covering more than 80 individuals. It not only provides free tuition but also establishes a fund that the public can contribute to, helping with other educational expenses beyond tuition. The program was introduced by Governor Janet Mills, University of Maine System Chancellor Dannel Malloy, and trustees. It builds upon Governor Mills’ proposal to create a scholarship fund for those affected by the shootings.

Governor Mills, a Democrat, expressed gratitude for the generous support from the people of Maine. She mentioned that this initiative shows the state’s commitment to stand by those who were injured and the families of the victims in the months, years, and decades to come.

The beneficiaries of this program include spouses and the biological, adopted, and step-children of the 18 individuals who lost their lives. Additionally, the program extends its coverage to the 31 Maine residents who were injured in the shootings.

The cost of in-state tuition and fees at the University of Maine System is approximately $10,200 for this academic year. This initiative aims to ease the financial burden on the affected families, providing them with an opportunity for higher education without worrying about tuition costs.
