A brave lobsterman in Maine jumped from his boat to rescue someone in a stolen car that had driven into the bay. The incident happened near East End Beach in Portland. The police were called to Cutter Street Boat Launch when the stolen vehicle entered the water and started to float away before sinking with a person inside.
The police revealed that the car had been reported stolen earlier in the day from South Portland. The occupant’s identity, a 33-year-old person, hasn’t been disclosed.
Describing the lobsterman as a “Good Samaritan,” the police mentioned that he was on a nearby boat equipped with dive gear. While the police and fire departments forced entry into the submerged vehicle, the lobsterman entered the water to assist in rescuing the occupant. With his dive experience, he pulled the person out and brought them to the boat launch.
Portland Police Lieutenant Robert Doherty praised the lobsterman, saying, “The citizen that aided the rescue risked their life to rescue this person and certainly gave them a fighting chance of survival.” The lobsterman, identified as Manny Kourinos, stated that he was just doing what felt natural, relying on his over 20 years of diving experience.
Initially unresponsive without a pulse, the person rescued from the vehicle was revived and taken to Maine Medical Center. They are currently in stable condition. The submerged car, located about 75 yards offshore, has been recovered from the water. The police are urging anyone with information about the case to come forward.
