In Naples, a man named Eric Sweda, aged 36, was wounded during a gun exchange with the police on a Sunday night. Sweda, reportedly intoxicated, initially called for help but disconnected the call. When contacted again, he expressed a need for help and voiced concerns about the government, becoming hostile. Deputies visited Sweda’s home, and as they were leaving, he allegedly fired shots at them, leading to the deployment of a tactical team.
During negotiations, Sweda continued to emerge from his home, firing shots at the police. Deputy Alex Markellos from the regional tactical team returned fire, injuring Sweda. Sweda was subsequently arrested and taken to Maine Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries.
The Maine attorney general’s office will conduct an investigation, as is customary when any law enforcement officer in Maine uses deadly force.
