Dead Holden Police Chief Being Honored

Holden Police Chief Chris Greeley, who passed away in March due to a short illness, was recognized for his outstanding community service. The Spirit of America Award was posthumously given to him by Penobscot County on Tuesday, acknowledging local individuals and groups for their commendable contributions to the community.

One of Greeley’s notable achievements was starting the Holden Police Department’s 25 Days of Kindness program about six years ago. This initiative, which helps community members in need during December, became a symbol of his dedication to making a positive impact.

During a ceremony honoring over 30 Spirit of America recipients from Penobscot County, Greeley’s wife, Donna, and son, Cole, received the award on his behalf. The event recognized individuals who had earned the award in 2021 and 2022 but were unable to attend an in-person ceremony.

Donna Greeley emphasized that the award reflects Chris Greeley’s character and the numerous random acts of kindness he performed throughout his life. She shared anecdotes of his generosity, such as paying for someone’s lunch at the McDonald’s drive-thru or giving a gift card instead of a ticket during a traffic stop.

Amidst the current challenges of anger and hatred in the world, Donna Greeley encouraged people to honor Chris’s memory by spreading kindness. She said, “Do something kind in his honor.”

Despite Greeley’s passing, his family and the Holden Police Department continue the 25 Days of Kindness project this year. The initiative, which raised over $20,000, will support food distributions, cover heating oil costs, and provide other gifts to those in need.

Lt. Andrew Whitehouse, who worked alongside Greeley for over 30 years, expressed the department’s appreciation for their former chief’s dedication to the 25 Days of Kindness initiative. Whitehouse mentioned that continuing the project is an honor and believes Greeley is smiling down on them.

Greeley had a distinguished 32-year career, serving in various Penobscot County police departments, including Veazie, Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office, and Brewer. Starting as a patrol officer, he eventually became the chief in Holden in September 2015.

Beyond his role as a police officer, Greeley had a diverse career. He co-hosted on the George Hale/Ric Tyler show on radio station WVOM and served as a Republican legislator in the House of Representatives from 2002 to 2010, when term limits prevented him from seeking re-election.
