The state’s Department of Transportation previously estimated that extending passenger service from Portland to Bangor would require “many hundreds of millions of dollars.” A study conducted five years ago suggested that restoring passenger rail between Auburn and Portland alone would cost around $300 million. Fortunately, the federal government is willing to provide substantial financial support if the project proves its worth.
