Basketball Girls: Cheverus and Oxford Hills Return Without Stars

Oxford Hills from South Paris and Cheverus from Portland are expected to compete for the Class AA North title, but both teams face challenges with key players no longer on their rosters. Last season, Oxford Hills defeated Cheverus in the AA North final 68-63 and went on to win the state championship by beating Gorham 62-25.

Miss Maine Basketball finalist Sierra Carson, who was a star player for Bangor Daily News All-Maine schoolgirl first team, graduated. Additionally, Tristen Derenburger, known for her excellent three-point shooting, is out indefinitely due to a knee injury, potentially ending her season. Oxford Hills’ coach Nate Pelletier will now rely on his daughter, Ella Pelletier, an All-Maine Schoolgirl second team selection, to lead the team. Ella Pelletier was the second-best rebounder (10.8 rpg) and fifth-highest scorer (14.6 ppg) in AA North.

Cheverus, on the other hand, retains All-Maine first team guard Maddie Fitzpatrick (17.7 ppg, 9.9 rpg, 5.1 apg, 2.5 steals per game). However, they lost key players like Emma Lizotte and the Jensen sisters, who transferred to other schools.

In Class A, defending champion Lawrence faces challenges due to significant graduations, including All-Maine first team guard Hope Bouchard. Teams like Hampden Academy, Brewer, Camden Hills, and Cony are expected to be strong contenders.

Class B sees a potential rematch between Ellsworth and Old Town, with Ellsworth having a strong team and Old Town’s Saige Evans leading the way.

In Class C, defending champ Dexter competes with Penobscot Valley and Mattanawcook Academy in a three-team race.

Class D has Southern Aroostook and Wisdom, both losing key players but returning quality players like Cami Shields and Lilly Roy.

Overall, the upcoming basketball season promises excitement and competition across different classes.
