Bangor Working to Plow Streets Faster this Winter

Bangor’s snow removal team is all set for this winter! They’ve got more people and better equipment than in a long time.

Right now, there are 43 people driving the snow plows, and only seven spots are empty. Last year, there were 11 spots open, so they’ve got more help. Plus, the team has shiny new plows for the streets and sidewalks.

Aaron Huotari, who’s in charge, says it’s the best setup he’s seen in the three years he’s been here. They’re ready to clear more than 80 miles of sidewalks and city streets.

Last winter, it took them a while to clear everything, sometimes more than a week. That meant people had to walk on the streets because the sidewalks were covered in snow. But this year, with more people and better training, they’re hoping to do better.

The new plow drivers got more training this year, which is awesome. They even hired some construction workers who don’t have much to do in the winter. These new drivers are up for the challenge, and they’re working well with the experienced team.

Each driver has a route that takes about three to four hours to finish. They also added two plows that spread salt to melt the snow. In total, they have 16 big plow trucks and nine more that don’t spread salt. They also have six smaller trucks.

The city council gave them $400,000 to buy two new sidewalk plows. Before, they only had five, and they would often break down. Now, they’re waiting for the final new plow to arrive.

They changed the plan for clearing sidewalks to make sure schools are the first ones cleared. This way, students won’t have to walk on the streets.

They’re also trying something new downtown. Usually, business owners had to clear the snow from the sidewalks in front of their shops. But now, the city is going to do it. It might take some time to figure everything out, especially with challenges like awnings and doors, but they’re giving it a shot.

Aaron Huotari says they’re still learning and trying out new things. So, let’s hope for a smooth and snow-free winter in Bangor!”
