Bangor Schools have news to share – new books are arriving in the school libraries! These aren’t just any books; they focus on telling stories about immigrant and new American families and explore the wonderful theme of diversity.
This fantastic announcement took place during an assembly at Bangor’s Fairmount Elementary School. The Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation played a big role in making this happen by providing grants to support these new additions to the libraries.
Megan Welter, Associate Commissioner for Education at the Department of Education, shared why these books are so important. Not only do they allow students to see themselves and their experiences in the stories, but they also help everyone learn about different cultures and experiences. It’s a way of showing that, despite our differences, we are all Mainers and Americans.
And here’s an interesting tidbit – the carts that will hold these new and exciting books were crafted in Lisbon Falls. It’s a wonderful example of how communities come together to promote learning and understanding through the power of books.
