The University of Maine’s women’s basketball team faced Harvard and turned the tables on them, winning 79-61 at the Memorial Gym. In their last two meetings, Harvard had dominated with scores of 84-56 and 69-40. This time, UMaine outscored Harvard 47-32 in the second half.
UMaine, now 6-4, showcased an impressive performance, especially in the second half. Graduate student guard Anne Simon played a crucial role, scoring 13 of her 17 points in the second half, along with eight rebounds, five assists, and four steals. Senior guard/forward Caroline Bornemann contributed with 16 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Sophomore guard Jaycie Christopher scored 13 points off the bench, and junior forward Adrianna Smith achieved a double-double with 12 points, 10 assists, and six rebounds.
Harvard, missing injured leading scorer Harmoni Turner, struggled. Senior guard Lola Mullaney led the Crimson with 18 points, while Abigail Wright had 12 points, Elena Rodriguez contributed 11 points along with five rebounds and five assists, and Karlee White added 10 points and seven rebounds.
UMaine’s three-point shooting was instrumental in their victory, with six players hitting at least one three-pointer. UMaine made 8-of-21 beyond the arc in the second half, finishing 10-for-30 in the game. In contrast, Harvard struggled with a 2-for-14 performance from long distance.
Coach Amy Vachon expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, acknowledging Harvard as a great team. She highlighted the importance of contributions from players like Jaycie Christopher, emphasizing the need for a collective effort beyond key players like Anne and Adi (Smith).
Harvard coach Carrie Moore acknowledged her team’s challenges, mentioning injuries, but commended moments of fight and effort. UMaine’s ability to adapt and respond to Harvard’s tactics, moving the ball well and hitting open threes, played a significant role in the win.
Despite Harvard’s attempts to narrow the gap in the fourth quarter, UMaine pulled away with a 15-7 spurt, securing the victory. The first half featured turnovers, with UMaine leading 32-29 at halftime.
UMaine’s next game is against James Madison on Dec. 17, while Harvard will face Boston University on Saturday at 2 p.m.
